Save Philly Libraries
Whitney says:
This news is so crazy, horrible and sad that I can’t believe it’s real: On Oct. 2 all Philadelphia public libraries are scheduled to close.
Can you believe that? Because of a stupid budget deadlock, every public library in Philly is about to shut down. This means no one will be able to borrow books or DVDs during a time when many can’t afford to buy them. ESL, GED and other important community programs are being canceled. There will be no more free Internet access or after-school programs.
I really can’t believe this is even an option, especially in a city where Benjamin Franklin formed the first public lending library. A notice on the Free Library of Philadelphia’s website urges patrons to contact local officials.
I know several librarians read this blog and have even set up displays based on Pop Candy’s book recommendations. Also, I know a lot of you live in Philadelphia — Pop reader Amy W. says the news “breaks the hearts of recession-hit, pop-culture lovers everywhere.”
Take a moment to spread the word about this tragic decision and/or contact an elected official. If it can happen in the City of Brotherly Love, it could happen in your town, too. And that’s scary.
